Beauty Emerging

May 6, 2018 by otpsalon

This young woman was a manager at our salon. She was working and going to school. One day I used her for a spontaneous photo shoot. It is a wonderful gift to experience a woman realizing her own beauty. Not long after with her new sophisticated and professional look, it helped her gain confidence and she soon got a new job in marketing for a construction firm. The power of Transformation. What changes are happening in your life? Maybe I can help!

Up for Transformation

April 29, 2018 by otpsalon

Michelangelo’s “Hall of Prisoners” were some of my favorite pieces of art in Europe. Commissioned by Pope Julius in 1505 for his tomb. However he died shortly after and due to funding and other projects it was never completed. Michelangelo was known for saying that he, “worked to liberate the forms imprisoned in the marble.”

I thought of this artwork recently because a client said to me after we did her hair and makeup for an event, “you love transformation.” And I would agree to some point yes, but I love to see the beauty of a person revealed.

Michel-Ange Michelangelo Buonarroti, unfinished statue (Atlas Slave), 1527-1528.

We all have a little rebel in us…

April 22, 2018 by otpsalon

I just watched a movie about Christian Dior. In it he was quoted as saying he was a reactionary. Dior’s big flowery dresses were in reaction to the boxy and masculine clothes during wartime. I often feel like this in hair and makeup now even though I appreciate art, I keep thinking, “the return to pretty.”
"My dream? To make women more happier and more beautiful."

Take this Poll

April 17, 2018 by otpsalon

Question:

This is a quote by Lena Dunham, 31, actress and pop culture activist: “Let’s get something straight: I didn’t hate what I looked like—I hated the culture that was telling me to hate it.” —Glamour, January 2017

What is your opinion of the the current view of women and their body image?

Blue Eyes

April 5, 2018 by otpsalon

I really liked the suggestions of celebrity makeup artist, Aliana Lopez.

NEUTRALS—Light browns, taupe, beige are great for daytime and very natural looks. Debora’s tip: If you go with one of these I would add a bright blush and/or lip color to really make the eyes pop.

CORALS—Any type of coral, rust, peach, sienna, even coppers. Debora’s tip: The darkness of lightness of your eye can determine the depth of the eyeshadow color.  For instance, it your eyes are light, pale blue then a soft peach is nice.  If your eyes are dark blue, like Margot’s in the picture, then a coral will work.

GREYS—There are many pictures with Jennifer Lawrence with smokey-grey eyes but I tend to think it is overwhelming.

PURPLES—Not always recommended but I like the color on anyone.  Best if warm-toned since blue eyes are cool and with a peach highlight can be really pretty.

METALLICS—Aliana suggests using bronze for vibrancy and rose gold for sheen. And  I happened to find a picture of Reese Witherspoon with Copper metallics … beautiful!

Hazel Eyes

April 5, 2018 by otpsalon

I have Hazel eyes and so do many people.  When choosing shadows, go by the primary color, and the flecks inside.

Leaning again on Celebrity makeup artist Aliana Lopez, (because she is more specific than most);

BLUES—Like in this picture of Jenna Dewan Tatum make eyes pop. Debora’s tip: For those of us with lines, blues are not advised.

PURPLES— … opposite on the color wheel from green/yellow, so they definitely make eyes pop. Eggplant is a great color for eyeliner.  Again, as we  age, warmer tones are less harsh.

GOLDS and BROWNS—Especially if you have flecks of these colors in your eye, they will really open up.  These are nice shades for daytime and then spice it up with a sparkly gold at night!

The Most Commonly Asked Eye Makeup Question …

April 3, 2018 by otpsalon

Which eye shadow colors are good for BROWN EYES? Today, we are taking a look at brown eyes.  Check back later for posts for an answer to the same question for hazel and blue eyes.

Notice how the model’s eyes are brighter on the inner and outer corner and just below the arch of the eyebrow? Use a highlighter after you apply your shadow for a more dimensional and brighter look

Brown Eyes

For an evening or glamour look, use a dark brown or dark purple shade in the waterline, the inside line above the lower lashes. They apply a soft shadow underneath as in the picture.

JEWEL TONES — borrowing from my blog on sparkly eyes and this article, colors like emerald, sapphire and here in the pic, burnt orange are fun. Debora’s tip: I would use these as special event colors as the model is. And unless you are comfortable with contouring, use them as accent colors.

PURPLES — lighter skin, lavender and mauve; darker skin, eggplant and plum. Debora’s tip: Some purples are warm and some are cool. If you have more hazel in your eye, warmer tones are better and if they are a solid color brown you are more likely to use the cooler shades.

GREYS — Some artists recommend grey shadows; but I must be honest … these are shades for younger women. We women who adorn laughter lines are also losing warm pigments in our hair and skin and this makes gray shades look harsh.

Hair Color for Men is No Longer Taboo

March 30, 2018 by otpsalon

George Clooney

Most would not argue that George is handsome and has style for a man his age (see, isn’t this fun?) … so I like to use him as a great example for current trends in men’s grey blending and or coverage.

Notice TWO constants: the eyebrows are always colored and the hair at the temples always has some silver running through it.

Eye Candy — 2 days of tips for men

March 30, 2018 by otpsalon

Men over 50 are now going to get an unexpected taste of what we women go through! Gone are the days of the ugly Hugh Hefner’s (and others I won’t mention here); men must aspire to look good too! Georgey has to keep himself up for Amal! As with millennial’s, it is essential to keep current—to be relevant. Unfortunately this is no joke! One simple way is to be well-groomed and have a close-cut beard. And ladies, please help them out with eyebrows, nose and ear hair!!!

Bobs and Bangs

March 28, 2018 by otpsalon

Youth Inspired Trends for Spring 2018

Sometimes staying current when you are a boomer is just KNOWING what is current. For instance saying to a  younger co-worker or relative, “I think that Bob that Lucy Hale has is adorable.”Even though you are thinking, “Who is Lucy Hale?”
I am a fringe, a.k.a., bangs, person (hairdressers trained by those from England do not say “bang” as it is a not-so-nice slang across the pond).  Notice how the above fringes accentuate the eyes and cheeks. This row of beauties contrasts with the top row of women who are younger and still do not mind focus on the jaw.
